This philosophy guides what we do here at Ampa Sishya. For over five decades, Sishya, Chennai has championed holistic education, shaping students who excel in the classroom and beyond. We carry forward that legacy. Academic rigour, excellence in the fine and performing arts, sports and physical development, independent thinking, and emotional awareness hold equal importance here.
We follow the CISCE framework. Our teachers bring it to life in the classroom every day through careful observation and practice. Your child will work with language, mathematics, science, and the arts. They’ll ask questions. They’ll solve problems. They’ll discover what genuinely interests them. Our classrooms, library, laboratories, and sports facilities give them the space and tools to explore.
Each year builds on the last. Young children learn through play and exploration. Older students research independently and think analytically. The progression happens naturally, with teachers adjusting to how each child learns. The goal is simple: help children stay curious about the world and prepare them for what comes next.
In Pre Primary, all the children in our school begin to hone their cognitive, emotional and physical development. Our teachers adopt Montessori-based learning programmes and teach children to explore new ideas, spend time on their interests and work on their social skills through interactions. The class work is designed to help children focus their attention on tasks and learn independently. With a guiding hand always nearby, children feel confident to take bold steps in their learning.
Children are exposed to rich language experiences through storytelling, rhymes, songs, picture discussions, and guided conversations.Teachers encourage them to ask questions and share their thoughts. They are encouraged to listen and speak to one another.
Through these experiences, they build their vocabulary and learn to form complete sentences. These activities also help in building phonemic awareness, helping children recognise and work with the sounds in words. Over time, children become comfortable expressing themselves and understanding how language works.
Mathematical concepts are introduced using concrete materials and everyday experiences. Children explore counting objects, observing patterns, sorting, and simple problem-solving through guided and play-based activities. Teachers use objects children can handle to make these ideas tangible.
Through these activities, children learn to count, recognise quantities, and grasp basic concepts like more and less. Puzzles and games help develop attention, memory, and logical thinking. These experiences help children see mathematics as something they can understand and use in their daily activities.
The classroom environment encourages sharing, cooperation, and emotional awareness. Children learn routines, take turns, and build positive relationships with peers and teachers. Teachers guide them in recognising their feelings and responding to others with empathy.
In Primary School, children transition from learning through play to more structured classroom instruction. The focus is on building strong foundations in reading, writing, and mathematics while keeping it engaging and hands-on. Teachers use a mix of activity-based exploration and direct teaching to help children gain confidence in their abilities. Subjects are taught with attention to how children best comprehend ideas at this age. Concepts are introduced in the classroom and reinforced through practical activities. Students begin to work more independently while continuing to receive guidance when needed.
English is the primary language of instruction and serves as a global language that opens doors to communication worldwide. Children read stories, write about their thoughts, and participate in class discussions. The aim is to help them express themselves clearly and confidently.
Indian regional languages connect children to their culture and heritage. From Grade 1, they study two additional languages. State requirements mandate choosing between Tamil and Hindi as a second language. The other becomes the third language. From Grade 4, French is offered as an option. If they choose French, Tamil becomes their third language.
Mathematics begins with clear explanations in the classroom. Then comes the Math Lab, where children use physical materials to work through the same concepts. They count objects, sort them, and arrange them in different ways. Over time, abstract ideas about numbers make sense because children can see and touch what they’re working with.
In Grades 1 and 2, children study their environment. They read about plants, animals, and weather, then observe, touch, and explore through activities. Teachers take them outdoors and let them discover how things work. The aim is to help children become aware of the world around them and develop a sense of responsibility towards protecting it.
Science classes start in Grade 3. Children conduct experiments, watch what happens, and try to figure out why. They ask questions constantly. Why does ice melt? What makes plants grow? Teachers guide them in testing their ideas and drawing conclusions. Science moves from textbook theory to hands-on experience they can see and understand.
History and Geography both begin in Grade 3. History teaches children about important events of the past that shaped the world we live in today. Why do we celebrate certain days? How did different societies evolve? The focus is on acknowledging the significance of historical events that have shaped our society, instead of memorising dates.
Geography introduces children to fundamental concepts about the world around them. They learn about mountains, rivers, oceans, and the different cultures and communities that exist across the globe. The aim is to help children develop a basic awareness of our planet and the people who live on it.
In today’s world, being comfortable with technology matters from an early age. Computer Science starts in Grade 1 with age-appropriate lessons. Children learn logical thinking through simple tasks and activities. The computer lab gives them tools to explore and understand how technology works.
Middle School is where students begin their journey towards becoming young adults. Subjects become more specialized and analytical. Students learn to think critically, ask questions, and develop their own meaning of what they study.
The classroom dynamic gradually changes. Students take on more responsibility for their learning while teachers continue to guide and support them. They use the library and digital resources to research topics and complete projects on their own. This prepares them for the independence they’ll need in senior school and beyond.
Students read a variety of literature and analyze it closely. They write essays, creative pieces, and analytical work where clarity and organization matter. Classroom discussions teach them to present their ideas and consider other perspectives.
These skills extend to other subjects and everyday communication. Students learn to read with understanding, express themselves in writing, and speak with confidence.
The focus shifts from concrete examples to abstract reasoning. Students work with concepts that require deeper thinking. They understand the logic behind mathematical formulas and how to apply that to solve problems. This builds the mathematical foundation they need for senior school.
Students work on complex programming projects that require problem-solving and logical thinking. They learn to break down tasks, write clean code, and troubleshoot when things don’t work as expected.
Classes take place in well-equipped laboratories where students get hands-on experience. They build applications, learn about algorithms, and core programming concepts. The curriculum covers both the theory behind computing and its practical application. This prepares them for the advanced CISCE Computer Applications curriculum in senior classes.
Apart from English, students study two additional languages:
This continues through Grade 10.
Middle School uses a structured examination system:
This progression from shorter tests to longer exams helps students get accustomed to formal examination conditions. By the time they reach Class 10, they know what to expect from CISCE Board Examinations.
From Grade 5 onwards
SUPW is an important part of our curriculum that aims to equip students with essential life skills. From Grade 5, your child dedicates one period each week to hands-on learning that goes beyond textbooks.
Activities include basic repairs and cooking, creative projects, wellness practices, and exposure to vocational work. Your child learns to solve problems by working through tasks that have real-life purpose and meaning. Led by experienced professionals, these sessions encourage critical thinking and practical independence. SUPW helps students approach challenges from different angles and find solutions that work for everyday problems.
PS1 to Grade 8
Art education at Ampa Sishya helps your child develop visual literacy, careful observation, and the ability to express ideas that words sometimes cannot capture.
From PS1 onwards, children work with drawing, painting, origami, craft, and design activities in our dedicated Art Studio. They explore different materials and techniques while gaining fine motor skills essential for writing and other precise work. As they progress, art becomes a way for them to communicate complex thoughts and emotions. The focus is on creative exploration and building conviction in their own expression.
PS1 to Grade 8
The music programme introduces your child to vocal training, various instruments, and the joy of making music together. Our Music Studio is equipped with instruments for exploration and learning. We have experienced staff on board to guide students through this journey of finding their own sound.
Young children begin with action songs that combine movement and melody. As they grow, they understand rhythm, coordination, and listening skills through structured sessions. Many students participate in the School Choir, where they learn the discipline of group performance and experience how individual voices come together to create something larger. Music education builds focus, memory, and the ability to work in harmony with others.
PS1 onwards
Physical education is an integral part of your child’s daily routine at Ampa Sishya, supporting motor development, fitness, and an understanding of teamwork and fair play.
Young children start with movement-based activities that build coordination and body awareness. As they progress, they transition to structured sports that teach rules, strategy, and cooperation. Our facilities include a turf area with a basketball court, multi-sport activity court, and football field where students develop athletic skills and discover what they enjoy.
We create an environment where both natural athletes and those still finding their stride can participate meaningfully. The goal is to help every child gain physical confidence, understand the value of staying active, and learn lessons about persistence and sportsmanship that carry into other areas of life.
From Grade 3,students are divided into our vibrant House System. It is a core school tradition that builds the student community and belonging across different age groups. Students are divided into four distinct houses. Each house at Ampa Sishya is named after a prominent river, symbolizing the flowing energy and values we aim to cultivate:
Through this system, students engage in friendly rivalry and collaborative efforts, earning points for their houses through academic achievement, sportsmanship, and participation in various school activities.
Drama and Dance
PS1 to Grade 5
From PS1 through Grade 5, your child attends weekly Drama and Dance classes that support your child’s personality development and creative expression.
Drama teaches storytelling, self-assured speaking, and the ability to step into different perspectives. Children learn to use their voice, body, and imagination to communicate ideas. Dance helps build rhythm, coordination, and a form of expression that doesn’t rely on words. Both disciplines help children discover their creative voice and become comfortable performing in front of others. These skills serve them well in presentations and public speaking as they grow older.
Grades 1 to 5
Classes 1 through 5 have dedicated time for puzzles and board games. This is structured learning through strategic play.
Your child learns to take turns, demonstrate patience, and work cooperatively with classmates. Games challenge them to think ahead, consider multiple possibilities, and adjust their approach when something doesn’t work. Puzzles teach persistence and the satisfaction of solving something through careful attention. These sessions develop cognitive skills and social awareness in an environment where learning feels natural and engaging.
PS1 onwards
Social Emotional Learning is woven into daily classroom life from PS1 onwards. We believe that recognising emotions and building positive relationships are as important as academic skills.
Your child learns to recognize and name their feelings, understand what others might be experiencing, and communicate respectfully even during disagreements. Teachers guide them in managing emotions, resolving conflicts constructively, and making thoughtful decisions. These are practiced daily through classroom interactions, group work, and guided reflection.
The skills developed through Social Emotional Learning help children form meaningful friendships, handle challenges with resilience, and create a classroom environment where everyone feels respected and heard. These include self-awareness, empathy, emotional regulation, and responsible decision-making.
The curriculum at Ampa Sishya is thoughtfully structured to support children as they grow into individuals. Academic rigour, creative exploration, physical development, and emotional awareness all progress together. Each stage prepares them for what comes next.
We invite you to visit the campus, walk through our classrooms and facilities, and speak with our admissions team about what your child’s learning journey will look like.
